Sejarah

Nama Protaktium berasal dari kata Yunani “Protos” yang berarti pertama.

Isotop unsur bernomor 91 yang pertama kali ditemukan adalah ²³⁴Pa, yang juga dikenal sebagai UX₂, sebagai bagian dari peluruhan alamiah ²³⁸U, yang berumur pendek. Diidentifikasi oleh K. Fajans dan O.H Gohring pada tahun 1913 dan diberi nama brevium.

Ketika isotop ²³¹Pa yang bermasa paruh lebih panjang ditemukan oleh Hahn dan Meitner pada tahun 1918, nama protoaktinium diambil karena lebih konsisten dengan kelimpahan isotopnya. Sody, Cranson, dan Fleck juga ikut aktif meneliti hal ini. Nama Protoaktinium  akhirnya dipersingkat menjadi protaktinium pada tahun 1949. Pada tahun 1927, Grosse membuat 2 mg bubuk putih, yang dikenali sebagai Pa₂O₅. Belakangan, pada tahun 1934, dari 0.1 gram Pa₂O₅ murni, ia mengisolasi unsur protaktinium dengan dua metode, salah satunya dengan mengubah oksida menjadi senyawa iodida lalu dipecah dalam kondisi vakum, dengan menggunakan filamen yang dipanaskan dengan reaksi sebagai berikut:

Sifat-sifat

Protaktinium memiliki kilau logam yang terang yang bisa bertahan beberapa waktu di udara. Unsur ini terdapat dalam pitchblende dengan kadungan 1 bagian ²³¹Pa terhadap 10 juta bagian bijih pitchblende. Bijih dari Zaire mengandung protaktinium sekitar 3 ppm. Protaktinium memiliki 20 isotop, dengan isotop ²³¹Pa yang paling umum. Isotop ini memiliki masa paruh 32700  tahun. Sejumlah senyawa protaktinium telah dikenali, bahkan beberapa di antaranya berwarna. Logam ini bersifat superkonduktif pada suhu di bawah 1.4 K.

Ia merupakan unsur yang berbahaya dan membutuhkan kewaspadaan seperti ketika menangani plutonium.

Pada tahun 1959 dan 1961, telah diumumkan bahwa Badan Otoritas Energi Atom Inggris Raya berhasil mengekstrak 125 gram protaktinium dengan kemurnian 99.9% setelah melewati 12 langkah, sehingga ini merupakan satu-satunya simpanan cadangan protaktinium untuk kebutuhan dunia untuk beberapa tahun yang akan datang.

Pengekstraksian dilakukan pada 60 ton bahan limbah dengan biaya $500000. Protaktinium termasuk unsur yang paling langka dan paling mahal yang tersedia di alam. ORNL (Badan Energi milik Dephan Amerika Serikat) menyuplai ²³¹Pa dengan biaya $280/gram. Unsur ini adalah pemancar partikel alfa (5.0 MeV) dan memiliki bahaya radioaktif yang sama dengan polonium.

Protaktinium secara luas ditemukan di sejumlah kecil di kulit luar bumi. Protaktinium merupakan salah satu unsur paling mahal dan paling jarang terjadi secara alami.

·         Protaktinium terdapat di bijih uranium pada konsentrasi 1-3 ppm. Protactinium mempunyai kilat metalik terang yang tahan beberapa waktu di udara. Protaktinium merupakan unsur superkonduktiv sekitar 1.4 K.

·         Protaktium terdapat di minyak merupakan material beracun berbahaya dan memerlukan tindakan penanganan yang serupa digunakan ketika menangani plutonium.

Protaktinium secara umum memberikan resiko terhadap kesehatan jika masuk kedalam badan, walaupun ada resiko eksternal kecil berhubungan dengan sinar gamma yang dipancarkan oleh protactinium-231 dan sejumlah hasil luruhan yang berumur pendek dari actinium-227.
